12 Feb Have You Tried Meditating with a Metronome?
Try this shortcut to feeling calm and centered.
There are a whole different load of ways to “meditate”. I’m addressing that in the post You Don’t Have to Be in Full Lotus to Be Meditating! . But now, I want to share one of the most surprisingly potent and easily accessible tools I use to anchor my breathing and mind, the metronome.
Metro Meditate
I like to use some kind of active meditation to “settle” my mind, followed by a period of passive meditation. Metro Meditate is a tool that I built to quickly settle my mind — works through using the sound of a metronome to drive breath control (the idea of the metronome and meditation was first introduced to me via the wonderful yoga master Jo Phee).
The design
Metro meditate is timed on a 15-second cycle, which allows you to quickly slow your breathing to four breaths a minute. It teaches you the four separate parts of the breath cycle
Inhale — breathe deeply down to your belly
Retain — hold the full breath
Exhale — slowly exhale all breath until completely empty
Sustain — hold completely empty
Try it out here, and let me know what you think!
